Starbucks' New Ads...

I saw these new Starbucks ads (over HERE) and this one made me laugh.

I love my Starbucks... Just about everyone I know knows that about me.

Just thought I'd share.

The second picture is actually a picture of my desk. I got ready to post this blog, turned around planning to go make a cup of coffee and was struck by this image in relation to what I was blogging...

So I thought I'd share more...

P.S.: And yes, I am a Starbucks Coffee junkie... :-)

So much time @ Starbucks...

Since we don't have Internet at home yet (and probably not for at least a month)...

I spend so much time at Starbucks. Most of it is using their free Wifi. And it's funny to me how I feel when I show up and someone is sitting at the table that I usually sit at.

Just thought I'd share.

My Wife... the Starbucks Coffee Master

Well, it's official: My wife is a Starbucks Coffee Master.

You might be thinking: "What does that mean?"
  • The first thing that it means is that she gets a different apron. Her's is now black instead of the normal green.
  • She has attended a special training dealing with coffee quality.
  • Better knowledge of what makes Starbucks' coffee, Starbucks' coffee.
  • Understands the different regions of coffees and their different flavors.
  • Knows what kinds of coffees would go with different desserts (like a blueberry muffin).
  • How a coffee is decaffeinated (cause anyone would really want that).
  • And lots of other groovy-type coffee trivia (which means watch out if Trivia Pursuit ever rolls around to coffee trivia and my wife is playing... you'll be smoked!)
I'm just proud!!

Starbucks + iTunes

So I popped into Starbucks this afternoon to grab a quick-pick-me-up before heading off to some Rock Band with the guys and then to BWW's for wings and trivia.

While at Starbucks, I logged onto the Internet with my iPhone only to find that the Starbucks page is now loaded onto my iTunes window. Sweet!!! I can browse their CDs and albums directly over my phone and buy songs. The only thing that didn't appear to be working on my stop (maybe they are still working out the bugs) was the "Now Playing" song and the "Recently Played" songs. But that's still pretty sweet.

I just love it when things work together.

Free Wifi is back at Starbucks...

Free Wifi is back at Starbucks.

HERE's a story on Engadget about it.

If you've got AT&T internet at home, you can get on for free with your user name and password from your home account. If you pick up a Starbucks gift card and register it online, super-easy, then you can get 2 hours for free (at a time?). No word on whether the free Wifi connection for iPhone users is back yet. I guess I'll have to pop in, grab a cup this afternoon and see.

Good stuff.

I'm glad that Starbucks has opened up it's Wifi. That is one of my favorite places to hang, but I could never get online without paying (thanks to T-Mobile). But that isn't the case any longer. Good deal.

Free iTunes from Starbucks over the weekend!!

We gave away a whole bunch of free music download cards over the weekend from Starbucks!!

Starbucks has brought back their "Pick of the Week" promotion for a short run... which I've been making use of myself. The other night Jackie brought me home a whole load of them and we dealt them out Sunday!!!

It was a "Counting Crows" and "Hilary McRae" video!!!

Good stuff... and FREE!!

AT&T at Starbucks!!!

Starbucks made good on it's promise to make its Wifi available to AT&T internet customers.

I noticed the other day when I was at Starbucks that there was an option for AT&T customers. So I looked up my username and password and sure enough, works like a charm. Good deal Starbucks.

Check out a story from Engadget HERE.

Now, down to this Pike Place, chocolate banana coffeecake and some work.

The End of the World as we know it... Starbucks closed for 3 hours...

Tonight, Starbucks will close it's doors for 3 hours of mandatory training for all Starbucks employees... Check out a story HERE.

It's actually a pretty good thing. My wife works for Starbucks and is required to attend tonight's meeting. The standards company-wide have gotten somewhat lax. Supposedly all employees tonight will be getting some much needed re-training or training in their area of expertise.

So... bottom line... You'll live for 3 hours tonight while they're all closed. But in the end, everyone will be getting better drinks as the standards will be back where they as supposed to be.

There might be a good youth ministry principle here. Sure, it's tough to do the needed training. But in the end, everyone wins. What would you be willing to do so that your youth ministry wins? What do I need to do so that my youth ministry wins? Especially if its something difficult.

Church growth and a cup of Starbucks...

I have a bit of a different perspective on Starbucks... considering my wife works at one. And I have to admit, if you were to read through my blog, you would find that I love Starbucks. I especially love that Apple (iTunes) and Starbucks have teamed up for some things. I just think it's cool... and my wife is tired of hearing about it.

Well, last year Starbucks did something really dumb. They started trying to compete with McDonalds!!! You know, double quarter pounders, Ronald McDonald and bacon, egg and cheese biscuits. Instantly I recognized it as a church growth principle that we've talked about several times before, but I wanted to wait until the numbers were in...

Well, the numbers are in...
Starbucks stock is falling (40%... I know, we have some)...
Sales are struggling...
Stores are closing (100 low performing stores)...

Why? Starbucks isn't Starbucks anymore.

Two articles (HERE and HERE) came out yesterday in the New York Times and a customer actually passed them along to my wife. And as I read them that statement kept coming back to me over and over and over... Even though it never said it in the article, the idea was that Starbucks wasn't Starbucks anymore. It had changed and become something different.

In an effort to get things turned around, Starbucks is bringing back Howard Schultz who lead the country from 1987 - 2000. The first couple of paragraphs of one of the articles tells the story... in my opinion... check it out:
"As part of a turnaround plan, the beleaguered coffee giant said Wednesday that it would discontinue warm breakfast sandwiches at its stores and focus instead on healthy breakfast options and high-quality baked goods.
“In short, the scent of the warm sandwiches interferes with the coffee aroma in our stores,” said Howard D. Schultz, the company’s chairman and chief executive."

When you walk into a Starbucks, it smells like McDonalds... not coffee. And they are exactly right. It smells like sandwiches because they started selling sandwiches. Why?
-Trying to compete with a McDonalds.

Now, you might say, that's just a coincidence... But it's not. Recently the Starbucks stores in our area started opening a half an hour earlier... 5 am... why, you ask???
-Because it seems that McDonalds down the road does (in my opinion).

Here's another short snipet: "Mr. Schultz has said he wants to refocus on the “customer experience,” recapturing some of the magic of the chain’s early years, when employees — who had heard the term barista before Starbucks came along? — made the drinks by hand and customers were excited by top-notch coffee.
"Mr. Schultz faces a difficult task: He has to slow down the company to make stores feel more like hip neighborhood coffeehouses while also delivering the steady growth that investors have come to expect from Starbucks."

Now, I love Starbucks (I'm sipping on some home ground stuff right now...). I love to go to Starbucks... it's one of my favorite offices away from the office, but I have to admit, there are some problems with the stores.

So... what's the church growth aspect of things in this article?
Simple... two things:
1. Churches need to focus on those who are coming in their doors and those who may come in their doors.
2. Churches need to do what they do best and not worry about what everyone else is doing.

What always seems to happen in churches is that churches develop something that they are known for... AWANA... Students... Children's... College... Great worship... Powerful preaching... and they do it and do it well and people come for what is done well. But then that church notices that another church down the road is doing something different well. So they begin to adapt their programming to meet the competition of the other church. Rather than continuing to focus on what they are doing.

It's like a "Pizza Hut" looking across the street at "McDonalds" and saying, "Hey, we can make cheeseburgers too!!" Then in that situation, they take a location that makes pretty good pizza and they ruin it because they start tying to sell cheeseburgers. Or if "KFC" should look across the street at "Pizza Hut" and say, "Hey, we can make pizzas too!!" Then they take a place that is known for chicken and mess it up by trying to cook pizzas. Or if "Starbucks" should look across the street at "McDonalds" and say: "Hey, we can serve breakfast sandwiches too!!" In the end, everyone loses. Because we don't have any place that makes good burgers, pizzas, chicken or coffee. (Not that McDonalds, KFC or Pizza Hut actually make that great of stuff... but you get the picture...)

One of the problems with the scenario is this: Churches have begun or have always seen since the Reformation movement (16th and 17th centuries), the church across the street as competition rather than companions in Kingdom work. We see the baptist church... the community church... the presbyterian church... as someone that we need to run out of business rather than someone that we should celebrate and partner with in working for the Kingdom of God. (Differences in opinions and theology aside at the moment.) There is a church... Millcreek Baptist Church... being built about a mile down the road from FVCC. Is that church God's church or competition?

When a church tries to do something outside of its nature and tries to provide something inconsistent with its identity and mission, everyone loses. The church loses its way. The people lose what they have found at that church. The staff at that church lose their passion because they are doing something outside of their giftedness. God loses because that church isn't doing what He put it there to do.

Seems simple enough:
People like coffee... Starbucks has good coffee... Sell coffee.
People like things done well... Churches do certain things well... Keep doing things well.

Simple, but hard to stick with.

Crazy... but sweet... ordering Starbucks with an iPhone??!!!

My wife would totally hate this... since she works at Starbucks... because I'm sure it would make her life insane in the store.

But I saw this morning on MacRumors of the concept of being able to order your Starbucks through the iPhone. (As if I don't use it enough now...) Which would be totally sweet. It would kinda be like call-ahead-seating at Texas Roadhouse... which is very cool.

Here's a clip from the article which is HERE.
"The system would, for example, allow customers to order a drink with the press of a button on their iPhone which would then notify them when their order was ready. The Forbes article suggests that this may put Apple's partnership with Starbucks in a new light."

Starbucks Song of The Day

Well... I've pretty much been on a Starbucks run everyday this week picking up Song of the Day coupons. They are pretty awesome. If you buy a drink and pick up one, it will get you a free music download.

Tonight, I walked into Starbucks and picked up Keith Urban's "I Told You So" off his newest album. It's on the radio currently!!!

Score!!!

iTunes at Starbucks!!!

Yesterday was the day for the roll-out of the the Exclusive Starbucks store on iTunes when in a Starbucks. I can hardly wait until March when it hits the Chicago market. It makes me almost want to hop on a plane and fly out... just kidding... but kinda...

Here's a clip of a story found HERE complete with pics!!!
" As promised and Starbucks started their rollout of the Starbucks WiFi Music Store in select cities. Gear Live is lucky enough to be in Seattle, the first city to get the special version of the iTunes Music Store in our Starbucks. The service allows laptops, iPhones, and the iPod Touch users to connect for free to the iTunes store while sipping lattes without having to pay for for a T-Mobile Hotspot account. Click through for our full impressions on Apple’s new partnership with the coffee mega-store Starbucks."

Very cool... very cool...

Starbucks to give away free music...

This will be pretty sweet...

And I've got my wife on the lookout for the lowdown... As soon as I've got it, I'll post the lowdown here!!

Check it out:
"In order to promote its new partnership with Apple and the Wi-Fi Music Store, Starbucks plans to give away 50 million iTunes songs to US customers. Between October 2—the launch date of the Wi-Fi Music Store capabilities at select Starbucks locations, according to a separate announcement of the company's today—and November 7, the coffee kings at about 10,000 stores will hand out roughly 1.5 million free song downloads per day. That's a lot of songs... and coffee."

HERE's the rest of the article.
If it's a free download with a coffee purchase, I'll be a regular Starbucks junkie every morning!!!

New Apple iPods and Starbucks... AWESOME!!!

As part of the new iPod/iPhone lineup set to come out this fall, there is a joint venture planned between Apple and Starbucks... two things I love by the way...

iPod/iPhone users will be able to access songs at Starbucks!!!!

Check out a bit of the story HERE.

Here is a small snipet:

iPhone users will also be able to access the wireless iTunes store. And, as part of a new deal between Apple and Starbucks, Starbucks customers will be able to log on to iTunes for free wirelessly to buy songs and find out which songs the Starbucks store has recently played."

I must say... that's stinkin' awesome!!! I can't wait to walk into Starbucks and have my iPhone recognize the song, tell me what it is and where I can buy it on iTunes. Sometimes Starbucks has some pretty great music. (Now if Starbucks would only allow iPhone/iPod users to turn down the volume and change the track... but that might get out of hand!!!)

HERE's what Apple has to say about it:

"Walk into a participating Starbucks with your laptop, iPhone, or iPod touch and buy whatever’s playing — along with millions of songs on iTunes — while your latte cools."

The only downside to this is that it won't be here in the Chicagoland area until March 2008. It will begin in Seattle (of course) and New York in October and San Fran in November (about 10 weeks too late for me). But it will still be pretty awesome when it gets here.
