I wish AT.T would get its stuff together

On the flipside of the post that I just posted about Logos, I wish that AT&T would get their act together!

When we moved to our house in North Aurora, we wanted to go to being a "streaming" family with some antenna live TV. Meaning that we would watch the majority of our TV off the Internet along with having an antenna for live shows that we wanted to watch (like Cubs' games).

But when we started to initiate the move, we discovered that AT&T DSL isn't in our neighborhood yet.

So for the past 6 months, we've been living (Internet-wise) off of connections at FVCC and Starbucks.

Until a couple of weeks ago when we got a flier in the mail saying that they were coming to North Aurora!!! YAY! But when I called, they said that they weren't in our neighborhood yet.

Yesterday we got another one. But I called this morning and they still aren't in our neighborhood!!! If we aren't in your area, stop sending up fliers!!! And get your act together.

Then yesterday, the much anticipated tethering option to iPhones was announced. Could be the answer to my problem. Only to find out that it might not happen until the end of 2009 and then it might cost me more money.

Come on!!!

Jim

I love Logos Bible Software!!!

I love Logos Bible Software. (If you have no idea what I'm talking about and like/love studying the Bible, you have got to check out this software. There is a Mac version (which is way better) and a PC version.)

I was reading today in my Google Reader (where I read all my blogs) that they are getting ready to sell a new set of commentaries from Tyndale Press (love the name!!!) called the "Cornerstone Biblical Commentaries." Back in August (yeah, 10 months ago), they were giving away a free sample of their "Matthew/Mark" volume.

From their website, it looked like they were still giving it away. So I tried to pick up the free copy, cause hey, free is good.

But when I tried to use the promo code, it didn't work.

So I called Logos, as I have an account with them. After bouncing around a couple of different places, the guy informed me that the code I had was an old code that was no longer active.

But he decided to go ahead and unlock it for me anyway!!! Just because I asked!!!!

That's stinkin' awesome!!!

If you aren't familiar with Logos, I would love to tell you all about it sometime. But I just wanted to share a little bit of awesomeness from a company that genuinely cares about it's customers!!!

Thanks "Jim" (not me... the guy who helped me) if you're reading this!

Powerful post for those in ministry...

My buddy, Neal Benson who is a youth pastor in Las Vegas, posted a pretty powerful post on his blog this morning about ministry and our, as ministers, relationship with God.

I won't repost the whole thing. But here is a snipet:
"I was doing well with this time with Jesus; I was able to wake up early and spend time with Jesus. I had my days where I had long nights out with students and times on missions trips that I wasn’t able to get this special alone time with God but I never really felt as empty as I do right now. I am not sure if it is because of being a new dad or seminary or work. I would love to have something to place the blame on; but the only blame can lie with my choices and me."

It would do you well to give it a read HERE. It's not a long post but it's a powerful one. Thanks for the reminder Neal!

Chick-Fil-A in Aurora, IL

I love Chick-fil-a.

That's no secret to anyone. I have loved the food and franchise since my time in eastern Tennessee and at Milligan. And anytime I head south down I-65, I always stop at the Chick-fil-a in Lafayette, IN. (I almost know the employees by name...)

I love the sandwiches.
I love the sweet tea.
I love that they play Christian music.
I love that they are closed on Sundays.

So I was stoked this morning to hear (thanks M.M.) that they may be coming to the Chicagoland area. (I read the story HERE.) I hope that it works out. And I think that the franchise will find the Chicagoland area a great place like Sonic did last summer. (For almost a month, wait times to get into the Sonic were well over 2 or 3 hours during their peak meal times.)

If it is coming, I will be there on opening day. (First 100 people get free chicken for a year!!!) I might have to get the sleeping bag out.

Check out some of my previous thoughts on Chick-fil-a HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE if you doubt my love for this restaurant.

Ferris Bueller's Ferrari House Now For Sale...

... and I forgot my checkbook this morning.

Actually I saw THIS on the news last night. The local Fox affiliate was given a tour of the house since the house is here in the Chicagoland. It is an impressive structure. But it really left me wanting to watch Farris Bueller's Day Off.

This is the house that was used in the movie for Cameron's house, which held the ferrari.

Bueller...

6th anniversary

Jackie and I had lunch today at Applebees. It was the site of our
first sudo-date. It wasn't really a date, more like a 'wanna grab
lunch?' after church. But we thought we grab some lunch and celebrate
our 6th anniversary.

Where does the time go?

Best night for summer study

We are making plans for the upcoming high school summer study. (If you aren't involved in our ministry, please don't vote... Thanks!)

Take a second and give us an idea of which night would be best.

Errett and Burnet in Cincinnati

I blogged while I was in Cincy (HERE) about planning to visit the Spring Grove Cemetery. I did.

It was fun walking around in a strange cemetery (not that any cemetery is that familiar) looking for a couple of graves.

But I visited quite a few. I visited the Fillmore family plot, R.C. Foster, J.J. Challen, as well as the two pictured below:

Here is the marker on the Errett grave.

This is the marker at the D.S. Burnet grave.

I just thought I'd share... since I was there.

I stumbled onto THIS today from my good buddy Josh Griffin at Saddleback. Since Jackie and I just backed down our monthly minute total on our cell phones to pick up unlimited text messages on both phones, I thought I would sign up.

I got my first one instantly.

Pretty cool to get a shot of God's word every morning on my cell phone!

Today's was from Galatians 6:9 : "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." NIV

On being a best man...

This weekend was a great weekend.

I was honored and humbled to stand up for my best friend growing up as his Best Man. I was also humbled to be handed the microphone at the reception. As someone who speaks a lot (a couple of times every weekend), I love to speak and feel comfortable on stage with the mic. But this weekend at the reception, I was seriously nervous. I haven't felt that way about a speaking engagement for a while.

But one of the great things about this weekend is that I thought about things that I haven't thought about for a while.
  • church camp... when Dale Harlow, my youth minister growing up tried to convince 5 of us that Jason from Friday the 13th was coming to get us. Brad Davis and myself ran like little girls, another of group fell down and cried like a little girl while Aaron, the groom this weekend, planned to stand his ground.
  • travels with our church... Orlando... Indianapolis... all those trips to Columbus... Cincinnati and other Bible Bowl spots along the way.
  • a trip to Kings Island in Cincinnati with some buddies from college.
  • taking a road trip and listening to the Macarena on the radio... and thinking it was 'cool!' Man, were we wrong.
It was like a tidal wave of thoughts, memories and conversations washed over me this weekend. Thoughts from the past... thoughts of the future... and good times in the present.

It was amazing to stand up for my friend. I would do again... a million times.

What an honor!!!

Free morning in Cincy... Cemetery!!!

So last night it dawned on me. (And not the reality that with cable TV, Internet and comfortable place, I start blogging almost instantly... although that is true. Maybe I should start a buy Jim Internet... keep www.tyndalespot.blogspot.com going and posting new material... (like Justin with his help me buy a laptop promotion). Naw!)

But what dawned on me is that I'm in Cincinnati... Where some cool Restoration Movement stuff happened.

I got up this morning, grabbed some free breakfast (always good) and I'm going to head up to Spring Grove Cemetery, north of downtown Cincy. I'm going to go and visit D.S. Burnet's grave and the grave of Issac Errett.

D.S. Burnet was a close personal friend and travelling companion of Alexander Campbell. I didn't realize until I read R. Richardson's "Memoirs" that D.S. travelled with Campbell as much as he did. D.S. died shortly after Alexander did.

Issac Errett travelled with Campbell. Shortly after Campbell's passing, Errett began the Christian Standard, in 1866, which is still publishing today.

So...
That's how I thought I would spend a couple of free hours this morning.

Maybe I'll post a picture or two later on. And no, I don't think it's weird to go walking around in cemeteries... :-)

Wedding in Cincy!!

Last night, I actually downloaded some Eddie Rabbitt (I'm Driving My Life Away among a few others)... For those who are keeping track, that song was released before I was born. But I know every, single word!!!

But that's kinda described my spring. I had the D.R. Trip, a couple of class trips (one with LCS and one solo to discover if I could find Thomas Campbell's house in Cambridge), a conference and this weekend. It has been a crazy 10 weeks with lots of trips.

This is the final trip until summer gets here and I go to CIY in Michigan.

But this weekend will be special. I keep in touch with almost no one from high school. In fact, I keep in contact with none of my high school friends who went to my high school. The only guy that I keep in regular contact is getting married this weekend. And I get to be his best man!!!! It will be a very fun weekend.

The only negative is that with all the travels, Jackie wasn't able to join me. So I'm solo this weekend. But hopefully the travels are about to let up for a bit.

Now go... listen to some Eddie Rabbitt (with two "T"'s).

CIY Believe dialogue... again...

So last week, I started a bit of a dialogue with a buddy of mine in Georgia... who is way smarter than me (in fact I had to read his entry three times and think about it for four days to come up with something to post... especially since he stated that he would be looking for one).

You can find Nate's second post HERE.
And you can find my first post HERE.

Technology and Youth Culture
I agree with Nate on a couple of points. First off, are our students totally addicted their electronic gadgets? Yes. today I mailed in our registrations for CIY Believe's bigger brother program CIY Move (which is a weeklong version that spawned the weekend version for middle schoolers, if I have my CIY timing down). One of the features of this event in the past has been the expectation on CIY's part that we would not allow our students to keep any electronic gadgets that might distract from the week. This included cell phones, iPods, DVD players and others of the sort. Every year this elicits no small amount of whining, begging, pleading, scheming and attempting to keep electronics from well-meaning adults. (This every year requires me to threaten to EBay any electronics discovered after the deadline to ensure that we have collected them all... which I at this point haven't had to do.) But CIY threw us a curveball last year when they asked for students to bring their cell phones to a couple of sessions... not cool. Actually, it made all of the youth ministers who have abided by the expectations look like the youth minister equivalent of the "big bad wolf" in view of several youth minister who didn't.

Are Adults Any Better?
But here's my point. Are students addicted to their electronics? Absolutely! Are their adult counterparts any better? No way!

In fact, just a couple of nights ago I was hanging out with a group of folks from our church. In the midst of the conversation, one of the adults remarked that he had gotten a new cell phone and had joined the iPhone club (Yay!). He had a blackberry before, but had worn it out. Another of the adults commented that he had worn out the roller ball on his Blackberry three times. Granted, this individual is a business man and uses his phone a lot for business purposes. But furthermore, adults aren't much better at not being addicted to their little electronic drug. In fact, I would have to admit that I first read Nate's comments on my iPhone. And even now, I sit in Starbucks on my laptop using their free Wifi.

So, are students to blame for their electronic gadget addiction? Sure. But they are in part a product of their environment. Does that make them innocent? No. And should youth ministers be cautioning our students against the excesses of electronic addiction? Probably... but only realizing that some may be as bad as their teenage audience. (This youth minister might be in that later category... depending on who you ask...)

Now, this is in no way a condemnation of technology. I am quite possibly the biggest techie that I know. Just the other day, the worship minister at my church (who doesn't blog or twitter, so I have no way of introducing him to you if you don't already know him) and I were talking in the office about the potential benefits of Twitter in the worship service. This service/addiction isn't that difficult to figure out, but it still has many over the age of 40 scratching their heads. But I am a huge technie.

So to blame the students for their electronic addiction isn't exactly fair. Our soceity at a whole is addicted to their electronic leashes.

I'll kick it back in Nate's direction...

A Word of Caution
I do want to issue one word of caution that some have missed in the previous message. This dialogue is a friendly dialogue for the purpose of learning and growing and Kingdom advancement.

This is NOT a debate or an argument! It is a friendly discussion.

I received one comment on this thread that saught rather than adding to the conversation to rundown Mr. Gilmour's reputation as "worldly," "haughty," "lofty," and "self-endowed." This sort of commenting will not be tolerated. This is a friendly discussion between TWO kingdom workers... one in the youth ministry and one in the college classroom.

I would certainly have expected better from a member of the CIY group.

If you would like to impune the reputation of either Mr. Gilmour (which sounds way too formal, but we'll go with it) or myself, go and get your own blog and post over there. If you do choose to post over there on this topic, we'll read your postings and comment appropriately. Therefore, your comment (Mr. Jefferson) has been removed.

An Invitiation:
For everyone else... If you're following along and would like to comment, we (Nate and myself) would more than welcome your thoughts, insights and comments. But let's keep them civil.

Jim

This was fun!!!

I was browsing through my Google Reader (which is the only way that I can keep up with my blogs).

And I noticed THIS little entry from Justin, who's been working with me over the past school year.

Check it out (HERE).

I appreciate his thoughts, energy, enthusiasm and organization. I'm gonna miss him until CIY (when we'll hang out all week) and then till fall.

Jim

Star Trek 2009 was awesome!!!

I have to admit:

When I heard last year about the new Star Trek movie coming out this May, I was a little skeptical. Part of my skepticism was in that aren't Shatner and Nemoy like 70 years old. When I heard that it was a prequel, I thought that will never work.

Then I saw the trailer. HOLY SMOKES!!!

I went Thursday night (9:50 IMAX showing).

And it was AWESOME!!!

I was always a fan of the Next Generation, but was a little young for the original seasons. But I've seen the movies and enjoyed the show. So I've been a bit of a fan of the series.

Let me just say... "You NEED to see this flick." It was easily the "Iron Man" of this year. It's incredibly intense and action packed, with enough Trekkie "lingo" to keep the true trekkies happy. The storyline was great and CGI (thanks S.O.) was incredible, but believable. The guy who directed it, also directs one of my favorite shows: "Fringe."

But maybe the biggest thing was Zachary Quinto as Spock. The vast majority of the characters, no offense to anyone, could be played by a lot of actors or actresses... Kirk, Scotties, Uhura. But not Spock. It took a special actor to do that. And Quinto nailed it!!! He had the mannerisms, the look, the line delivery. He was Spock!

It was a great flick. If you're headed out to see a movie, take in this one. It's awesome!!

National Day of Prayer

Today is National Day of Prayer.

Take a few moments today to pray!!!

Jim

P.S.: I do find it sad and disappointing that this is the first time in 9 years that there isn't a National Day of Prayer remembrance at the White House.

CIY Believe dialogue...

It's been many years since my undergraduate education at Milligan. My time there was invaluable. Not just because of the education, but because of the friendships and worldview that I gained. I don't have any biological brothers... just a sister that I love to give a hard time to. But because of my time at Milligan, I gained several "brothers."

One of those is Nathan Gilmour.

He is seriously one of the smartest dudes that I know.

While most of us are still trying to figure out what we want to do with our lives and wondering if we will ever grow up, he was just named a Professor at Emmanuel College, in Georgia!! Seriously!!! I'm 32 years old and one of my best friends is a college professor!!! Wow!!!

We both have some serious experience in the world of youth ministry. As many of you know, who are faithful readers, I've been doing youth ministry fulltime as a career and a calling for nearly 10 years. Nathan, or Nate or Nate-dogg to me, has been doing it about as along as a volunteer. (Which may in many ways make his opinion worth more than mine... the outside opinion is usually the better one.)

Recently he attended a CIY Believe date in Georgia. And made some posts about his experience (HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE). I took issue with a few of his statements, in the sense of open dialogue and learning.

He posted my response HERE. Here's a snipet:
"I think a lot of what CIY does is try to grab their attention and hold it for long enough to share the message of the gospel, and I think they are trying to do it in a way that does a couple of things:
1. It ministers in a fresh way to kids who are Christians already (because don’t we all need a kick in the butt every once in a while when we get off track)
2. It opens the message up to those who have never heard it before.

In my group, for instance, two of my 18 were kids who had never been to church before. They came because their friends said, ‘You’ll like this… it will be fun.’ Now, have they gotten saved? Not yet… but who knows what seed has been planted in their hearts and minds?"

As I said, Nate is a smart, smart dude... way above my intellectual level. But we thought maybe we could have some open dialogue on some of the topics of students, church, worship, conferences and the such. This is NOT IN ANY WAY a "Nate is wrong and Jim is right" thing. This is an opportunity for dialogue, discussion and learning. Are there some things that youth ministry could do better at? Absolutely!! Let's talk about some of those things...

We welcome your input and participation.

D.R. Trip Updates... Day 4: Tuesday (March 31)

My sincerest apologies for not getting these blog posts up about the D.R. trip quicker. (The last post was HERE.) My life lately... between preaching, school and everything else... has been sucking me dry of all of my extra energy lately.

But I am committed to getting a post up for each day. So, here is Tuesday, March 31.

Tuesday was a day all about work. We thought that we worked hard on Monday, but we didn't know anything yet.

Luis, pictured here, introduced me a few others to his good friend, the sledgehammer. We spent a lot of the day knocking down the walls of the old cistern and...

And then digging out the dirt and rocks. It was a long and hot day. Fran is shoveling here with me. He was an incredibly powerful worker and I was a wimp. He could work for hours... me, only minutes.

But our day's labor's earned us a trip to get ice cream at Bon. And it was good. Here, Brittany and Kathryn are enjoying their's. It was fun getting ice cream, but somewhat difficult because none of the employees spoke any English...

Ah the difficulties of serving in a country where you don't speak the language.

Sermon from the weekend...

Hey all...

Those of you who keep up with my life, especially through Twitter, know that I preached over the weekend last minute in adult worship. If you want to listen, and I will warn you that the audio is not good at this point (Monday, May 5, 2009) and we are hoping to get it fixed in the future, that would be great. For some reason the audio on the recording was "way" up so it sounds like I'm yelling... but I wasn't.

I felt good about the content and delivery (although the delivery may not come through until we've had some time to 'fix' it up a bit). So I enjoyed it.

So... without further adieu, you can listen to the sermon on Romans 12:2 (check out Romans 12:2 HERE) HERE.

Apple to buy Twitter???

I saw THIS come across my blog-reader today from several sources.

Here's a snipet:
"TechCrunch's Michael Arrington is reporting that rumors beginning to float around the blogosphere are stating that Apple is interested in purchasing Twitter for US$700 million in cash. Twitter, in case you've been off of the planet for the last two years, is the magical "social networking" tool that has you answer the question "What am I doing right now?" in 140 characters or less."

In thinking about, it's got me wondering what Apple has up it's sleeve... They don't typically buy things just for fun and to offer $700 million in cash means, to me, that they want it pretty bad.

Personally, I really enjoy Twitter. (You can find me HERE.) My wife, not so much.
I enjoy that it lets me keep up with friends from around the country over the course of the day and week... friends that I wouldn't be able to keep up with otherwise.

But part of me wonders what Apple is planning to do with it if they get it (if they even want it)? And all of me hopes that they haven't figured out some way to charge for it or add advertisements or something crazy like that.

It will be interesting to see what transpires between Apple and Twitter. They've got my attention for sure.

D.R. Trip Updates... Day 3: Monday

Sorry that these updates are coming a little slower than I had hoped. This weekend I was at Believe with our middle school students... but I'm committed to getting these up... and I will.

Monday came quickly and we got down to work.

And we had no idea how hard the work was about to be. In the first picture, Paige is helping bring in tools and supplies for the day. Monday was the first day that we saw the school, the "Fly" where we would be working, the total poverty that characterizes the area and the cistern that we would begin to work on.

One of the first things that we had to do was take all of the water out of the 5 x 5 x 5 cistern that existed and put it into anything that would hold water. There is no sense in wasting the water. So we filled up drums, water jugs and the tank on the roof. Jackie's job was catching the buckets that Isaias tossed back from the roof... and she was so good, Randy Moss would be jealous.

Several members of the group had the opportunity to feed the children who were going to school at the site where we were working. Here Kathryn is serving them lunch.

Shortly after their eating lunch, we ate lunch.

After lunch, the work really began. That's when the sledgehammers, shovels, pick-axs and buckets came out. We destroyed the roof of the cistern and began the next 3 days of long, hard digging.

The brighter side of Monday for me was that it was my birthday. I turned 32 (and yeah... you probably forgot to send your present... :-) ). That night, we were invited over to the Gabriel's for dinner. While we were there we heard stories from Gabriel, ate some incredible dinner and I was surprised by a birthday cake (which was awesome!!!)

But maybe the best part of the whole day was that I got my suitcase for my birthday!!!! 3 days late!!! Shortly after returning from the worksite that afternoon, my suitcase arrived. Opening that was like opening Christmas presents. I was so happy to see it.

All in all... it was an excellent way to spend a birthday!!

10 years ago today... Columbine

Ten years ago today, Columbine High School and two high school students, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, became the center of attention and forever changed the way that schools operate.

I was talking yesterday with a former student who works with me on the weekends (who consequently has a little blog now (HERE)) about Columbine. I have been working with students full time for about 9 years... and so I have never worked with students outside of the shadow of that terrible tragedy. This tragedy forever changed the way that schools operate and how they view their students. There had been tragedies before... but none seem to carry the weight that Columbine did.

Today... I took just a moment and thought about that tragic day... those students who lost their lives... those students who took life... and the teacher who lost his life as well. In some respects, 10 years doesn't seem that long ago. But in other ways, it's hard to imagine our world before Columbine.

Books for sale... Word Biblical Commentary Series

Hey all...

I'm doing a little shelf cleaning in my office. For a while now, I've got tons of commentaries that sit on my bookshelf for the most part unused. So I've decided to sell some of them off and replace them with Logos/Libronix resources. (If you're into Bible Study at all... I mean even a little bit... this is well worth the investment).

If you are interested in commentaries that are all in good shape, feel free to comment away and maybe we can work something out. But notice that I'm not giving them away... I'm selling them.

I have volumes from the Word Biblical Commentary Series (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Genesis, Romans, Ephesians, and Philippians... several of which are multivolume sets) for sale currently. Tomorrow I will have volumes from the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture series and the Bible Speaks Series.

If you are interested, comment and we'll go from there.

Thomas Campbell in Guernsey County... Success!!!

Well...

I had an interesting day. I started off in Zanesville looking for a piece of land. I had a deed that showed a piece of ground being transferred between a Garrett McCain and Thomas Campbell. I spent time tracking it down.

BUT... it turned out to be a bust.

I found the ground. But I'm pretty confident that it was a different Thomas Campbell than the one that I was looking for.

So...

I went back to Cambridge and back to square one. And by the end of the day, I found success. According to what I found in Cambridge today, Thomas Campbell and his family living in a house that sat on this corner in downtown Cambridge, on the corner of Wheeling and 7th street. Obviously this isn't the building, but it once stood here and the school that he started was here.

I have enough documentation to make a presentation (I think). Tomorrow I will visit the Guernsey County Maps Dept and see if I can find an old Cambridge map that will show me the original lay of the land.

After that I'm planning to head over to Quaker City. According to the material that I have, Guernsey County's oldest Restoration movement church is here... Central Christian Church (Central Christian Church).

Fun fun... and now more fun that I've found what I'm looking for...

Goose chase... Thomas Campbell in Cambridge

I'm currently in Ohio for a couple of days.

Here's what I'm doing.

According to Robert Richardson (personal friend and biographer for Alexander Campbell), Thomas Campbell, father of Alexander Campbell and one of the four founding members of the Restoration Movement of which Fox Valley Christian Church (Church of Christ, Christian Churches and Disciples of Christ), spent 3 years living in and around Cambridge, Ohio. Cambridge is 15 minutes north of where I grew up.

There isn't much information on Thomas' time in Cambridge. But we know (according to Richardson and A. Campbell) that he owned land, started a school and church.

So I'm here to see if I can track that information down. I want to see if I can find the land that he owned and see if there is anything remaining of it. Maybe the school became something... Maybe the church still exists... Maybe the house is still there as part of another house... Maybe nothing is remaining...

Those are the questions that I'm hoping to answer. Plus... It's for credit.

Wish me luck and here's hoping that I find something...

D.R. Trip Updates... Day 2: Sunday (March 29)

Sunday morning arrived...

The team decided to join several members of the G.O. Ministries team at the first ever 10K run/walk in Santiago.

Brittany and Kathryn decided to run. The rest of us decided to walk. Brittany made the entire 10K... which we found out later was actually 11K. Kathryn made a valiant effort, but only completed 5K.

The rest of us enjoyed a nice walk (5K) around Santiago.

Here is the whole group after the run walk. We all got medals for completing the run/walk in less than an hour. We also got T-shirts (mine however didn't fit... only a "L").

Following the run/walk, we returned back to the Casa. Instead of joining some from the ministry to play softball, we decided to watch some of the locals play bottlecap baseball (it actually has a name... but I can't remember it0. It was pretty interesting.

Following the bottlecap baseball, we visited the new site for the Gabriel's church. We also joined Gabriel as he baptized a member of his church.

Following that and dinner, we joined the church for church. It was a fun experience. We recognized some of the songs... sung a few with them... and listened to the message. (We didn't understand much about the message... but we know it was about Zacchaeus.)

Sunday was a fun and relaxing day. Monday wouldn't be.

And if you're keeping score... I, still as of Sunday, do not have a suitcase...

D.R. Trip Updates... Day 1: Saturday (March 28)

Well....

We are officially back from the D.R. If you are following my Twitterfeed on this page or in general, you know that.

We got back on Saturday night... April 4. Since I had very little access to the Internet while in the D.R., I didn't get a chance to blog any pictures or any experiences from the week. So I will blog from hindsight... post some pictures and a blog for each day.

You know our difficulties in getting out of Chicago on Friday. If not, click HERE.

Saturday morning, we arrived at the Atlanta airport to a zoo... literally. There were at least 150 people waiting to leave Atlanta through the International gates. And with a similar thunderstorm on the horizon as had canceled flights on Friday looming, everyone was looking to get out quickly.

We got rechecked in, through security and to our gate. We had vouchers left over from the previous day, which we used at the airport for breakfast, coffee (one last Starbucks for me before leaving) and other assorted items.

Only to find our flight delayed.

We ended up being delayed for about 2 hours. There was a problem with the plane that we were supposed to take. So they off-loaded all of our luggage, in the pouring rain, and replaced our plane with another. So we arrived in Santiago 2 hours later than we expected.

One nice thing about the flight to Santiago was that it wasn't crowded at all. So there was plenty of room to spread out.

After arriving in Santiago, getting through immigration, customs, and other assorted lines, we discovered that my luggage hadn't arrived with the rest of the groups. (BUMMER!!!) All that I had in my backpack was a pair of shorts, a pair of underwear and another T-shirt.

More on that later...

After filling out the necessary form, we piled in the bus to head to Casa de Gabriel. On the way to the Casa, John informed us that we would be doing the VBS that we had been planning to do immediately after getting off the bus. This was a little stressful to say the least, considering that we had not done any assigning of roles or much specific preparation.

We managed to pull off the VBS. It didn't go as well as we would have hoped, but it worked. Following the VBS, we got settled, ate dinner and then headed out for some ice cream.

It was a very busy day. The three above pictures are from the VBS. The last photo is the team photo after we arrived.

Stuck in Atlanta

I'm trying today to focus on a verse...
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

That's the verse that I'm trying to focus on. Jackie and I were just talking and in the midst of the talking I said, "This isn't how I envisioned this trip." And it's not. We're currently stuck in Atlanta until the morning. Officially weather in the Atlanta area had the airport shut down for almost an hour this morning. Forcing us to sit on the runway at Midway (not a fun experience) for about 2 hours waiting to leave. Even after they got the airport in Atlanta open, we still had to wait over an hour to get clearance to leave.

The long of it is that we missed our flight to Santiago. Our hope, upon leaving Midway, was that the ripple effect of the airport being closed and flights being delayed would delay our flight enough to catch it. But alas, it did not. In fact, our flight to Santiago left only 6 minutes late and we missed that by over an hour.

Luckily we ran into an incredible man... whom you can give praise for... Marvin... who set us up with airport vouchers in a Red Roof Inn nearby (which he didn't have to do). So here we are.

And I'm trying to remember that maybe God wants us on the Saturday flight into Santiago for a reason. For His reason. (This flight was the initial flight we should have had when we did our initial booking back in September, but overcrowding forced us to try to leave on Friday.)

So that's where we are.

Trying to remember that God works all things for good for those who love Him. We're trusting. Praying. And trying to be flexible. But for tonight, we're thankful for a shower and a bed.

Pray for our:
-Flexibility
-Frustration
-Changes to our schedule
-That we can continue to minister in the midst of where we're at

More hopefully in the morning. But it will be a mobile post from my phone.

Dominican Republic trip this week!!!

The much anticipated D.R. trip is coming up this week. It's difficult to believe that it's already here. Paige, one of the students who is going, blogged about it HERE. I will post some thoughts later on... I just wanted to draw attention to her post.

Pretty excited... but I've got a pretty full to-list before I roll.

wow... Student Suspended For Passing Gas

This story kinda made me chuckle a little bit...

Here's a snipet:
"School officials said the teen repeatedly passed gas to make other children laugh. They said the smell also made it difficult to breathe."

HERE's the whole story.

Something very cool...

I was pretty stoked about a little something that happened this morning with our middle school church.

I was teaching. And we are teaching through a series called "Closer." This morning we were talking about hearing God's voice in the midst of the noise of our world and we were talking about different voices that have/should have an impact in our lives. In the midst of this discussion, I said what I usually say when we talk about the importance of the Bible and Bible reading... namely that "if you don't have a Bible, I'll put one in your hands today before you leave."

After the service was completed... two students came up and requested Bibles!!! For one of these students, this was the first time she's walked through the doors of FVCC!!! I was a little blown away!!! Hopefully I'll have a chance to give away a couple more Bibles tonight as I'm getting ready for high school church. But that just blew me away a bit!!!

Thought I'd share!

Back in the saddle

I'm back in the saddle from my Restoration Movement Trip... if you were following my Twitter Feed (HERE), then you have a pretty good idea of what I have been up to.

But I'm back... rested up... and ready for Sunday.

I've got a Restoration Movement blog rolling in my head... but don't have enough time to post it now. But be watching for that.

On the road again...

Willie Nelson's "On The Road Again" is playing through my mind right now.

I'm heading out of town on leg 2 of the monthly travels (check out leg 1 HERE, HERE and HERE). This week, I will be traveling to many of the sites of the Restoration Movement's founding. Those of you who have been following my blog know that I did this a couple of years ago. That time, I traveled as a student. This time I am traveling as a "Teacher's Assistant." I will likely be posting some pictures of what I'm seeing and what I'm thinking as I go.

But I'm on the road again... maybe I should make a playlist of this song and "Rambling Man"... these trips are founding like one...
