Exodus 40:34-38 (New International Version)
34 Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 35 Moses could not enter the Tent of Meeting because the cloud had settled upon it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.36 In all the travels of the Israelites, whenever the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle, they would set out; 37 but if the cloud did not lift, they did not set out—until the day it lifted. 38 So the cloud of the LORD was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel during all their travels.

Exodus 35:20-29 (New International Version)
20 Then the whole Israelite community withdrew from Moses' presence, 21 and everyone who was willing and whose heart moved him came and brought an offering to the LORD for the work on the Tent of Meeting, for all its service, and for the sacred garments. 22 All who were willing, men and women alike, came and brought gold jewelry of all kinds: brooches, earrings, rings and ornaments. They all presented their gold as a wave offering to the LORD.
23 Everyone who had blue, purple or scarlet yarn or fine linen, or goat hair, ram skins dyed red or hides of sea cows brought them. 24 Those presenting an offering of silver or bronze brought it as an offering to the LORD, and everyone who had acacia wood for any part of the work brought it. 25 Every skilled woman spun with her hands and brought what she had spun—blue, purple or scarlet yarn or fine linen. 26 And all the women who were willing and had the skill spun the goat hair. 27 The leaders brought onyx stones and other gems to be mounted on the ephod and breastpiece.
28 They also brought spices and olive oil for the light and for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense. 29 All the Israelite men and women who were willing brought to the LORD freewill offerings for all the work the LORD through Moses had commanded them to do.

This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy.14 " 'Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it must be put to death; whoever does any work on that day must be cut off from his people. 15 For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day must be put to death. 16 The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. 17 It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he abstained from work and rested.' 8 The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9 Moses said to Joshua, "Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands."10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.

About Groundhog's Day... as it relates to youth ministry
I'll come right out and say it...
I hate "Groundhog's Day."
Actually the only thing that I like about Groundhog's Day is the movie pictured here (called Groundhog's Day) with Bill Murray. The movie itself is pretty good. Actually downright hilarious in places. But I digress...
I hate the Groundhog holiday. Not just dislike it... but actually hate it.
Here's why:
- It's silly.
- It's pointless.
- It's dumb.
- It makes us all look dumb because it's silly, pointless and dumb.
- It means nothing and has no practical function.
- It's based completely on tradition that has no basis in fact and is in fact counter-intuitive in nature in that sunshine should mean the end of winter but in fact this sunshine produces a shadow that drives the little varmit (supposedly... even though they drag him out of a fake hole in a fake stump in front of 40,000 people and 100 cameras... who in the world could see a shadow in the midst of that mayhem anyway... and which shadow of the 99 did he see from all the cameras flashes anyway... before he supposedly whispers in the ear of the dopey-looking guy in a top-hat (if I were Phil, I'd bite him in the ear... seriously!!???) back into his hole for 6 more weeks of winter!!!!
- There is little to no benefit in it.
But I digress again... I told you... I hate this holiday... (which shouldn't be a holiday, mind you... if I could find the idiot who made this a holiday I'd smack him... and now the stupidity seems to be spreading... we have Phil, Dave, Chuck, Sam, Willie (2 of them), Mel, Jimmy, Spanish Joe (Spanish Joe?) and General Beauregard Lee giving different predictions... ugh! Don't we have Weather Channel and can figure out the weather from someone better than a rodent?) But I digress again and again...
But I promise this rant does have a youth ministry and leadership point. It's just that every time I start typing, I'm reminded of how stupid this whole thing is and my fingers just take off.
I guess here's the point:
What in our ministries are we doing that doesn't have a point, help our ministries and only drains resources?
I look at Groundhog Day and I think "really?" Are there things in our ministries that we should look at and say "really? we're still doing that? why? what's the benefit?"
- Shouldn't we have some regular time of reflection on our ministries?
- Shouldn't we step back every once in a while and say, "Do we really need to do that anymore?"
Obviously I think we should. (I think we should collectively rise up and say to those who make calendars... stop putting Groundhog's Day on the calendar because it's not a real holiday.) I think we should look at our youth ministries and say, "We don't need that anymore," "That isn't helpful," "That needs to be changed to be more productive," "That doesn't serve a purpose."
But I know that there are some Groundhog Day lovers out there. (And feel free to skip commenting on this blog because you won't convince me of its importance... and don't misunderstand my rant to be a PETA-save-the-animals thing... it's not.) I'm for evaluation. I'm for taking a look out what we're doing, why we're doing it and deciding if its still worth the time and energy that we put into doing it.
Most of us don't want to do that kind of heavy lifting. It's much easier to do what we've always done. It's much easier to let something happen than fight to eliminate it or change it. Why? Because somehow that "something" got on the calendar because someone thought it was important. And in order to change it, you might have to have a hard conversation with someone about why it should be eliminated or changed. Which will lead to conflict. So we avoid it. Because that's easier.
That's no good.
And it makes us look silly, pointless and dumb (although... maybe those are harsh words). Rather, it makes us look irrelevant, wasteful and out of touch.
And many times, that's how the world sees the church. In part, because some of our ministries (and I'm not saying all... and I'm certainly not immune...) are doing ministry like they did 15-30 years ago. We're not evaluating, questioning, taking a look at what we're doing. We're often not asking the hard questions. We've often not having the hard conversations. We're often not employing the creativity in our minds to come up with new solutions to old or new problems.
So... just like Groundhog's Day... we continue to do the same things over and over again.
So... what?
- We need to evaluate what we're doing.
- Compare it with what was important to Jesus and His vision for His church.
- We need to ask the hard questions.
- We need to have the hard conversations.
- We need to eliminate or change those things that don't fit the vision for Christ's Church. (Matthew 22:37-40, Matthew 28:18-20, Matthew 9:35-38)
So we can grow.
(And hopefully get rid of dumb holidays... like Groundhog's Day...)
Jim
Feel free to jump in and comment (unless you're just trying to convince me of the importance of this supposed holiday... in which case... save the keystrokes...).

Why have you let the boys live?"
19 The midwives answered Pharaoh, "Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive."
20 So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous. 21 And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.

Tim Tebow Super Bowl ad
I'm not a huge Florida Gaters fan... but any stretch of the imagination (especially since they pounded my beloved Buckeyes a couple of years ago in the National Championship game).
I have been impressed, however, with the faith and witness of Tim Tebow, Univ of Florida's quarterback and Heisman trophy winner (2007).
So I was pleased to catch the rumor that Tim Tebow and his mom Pam are going to be featured in a Super Bowl ad on Feb 7 for pro-life. Pam was encouraged to abort Tim during pregnancy fearing that he would be born with defects. Pam and her husband were missionaries in the Philippines and instead chose to keep Tim and had a healthy baby.
This morning I caught the full story (HERE) about the upcoming ad. It's great that it won't just be a special little thing hidden somewhere among the Super Bowl hype but will instead be a full commercial running during the Super Bowl.
Here's a small snippet: "Tim and Pam share our (Focus on the Family) respect for life and our passion for helping families thrive," Jim Daly, president and CEO of Focus on the Family, based in Colorado Springs, Colo., said in a statement. "They live what we see every day - that the desire for family closeness is written on the hearts of every generation."
(Read the rest HERE.)
It will be great that, when in the midst of a country tainted by Roe v. Wade and on demand baby killing, an estimated 90-100 million viewers will see a pro-life message. Hopefully it won't get lost and will become a topic for watercooler conversation on Monday morning.

Fat guy running club update... and diet update...
It's been a little while since I've updated my faithful readers on my diet and running plans. So I thought today would be a good day.
Especially since I knocked out my longest run yet today... 4 1/2 miles! (It was a really good run... I felt strong. I ran a path that I had never ran before and it was fun.)
I am currently on track to run my 10k around spring break time. But I have also decided that I'm going to at least run the Columbus, OH Half-Marathon in Columbus, Ohio with my sister on Sunday, October 17, 2010. But who knows... by then I might be ready to run the full marathon... we'll see.
I'm also toying with the idea of running the E.T. Full Moon Midnight Marathon (Area 51 1/2 Marathon (at midnight around Area 51) in August... Yes, there really is a marathon like that. We'll see. I should be ready... but who knows...
On the diet front, I seemed to have run into (pun totally intended) a little wall at the 246 mark. This morning I weighed in at 247.5, the lightest since before the holidays. But I seem to be hovering (annoyingly) around this area. But I am confident that I can push through and break into new ground (245!!!) soon! I have been eating pretty good... but I might need to cut another 200 calories a day to push through. (Just not tonight... it's pizza night in the Clark house!!!)
So... that's where I'm at... running 10-12 miles a week and hanging around the 248 weigh in point! How are you doing with your New Year's resolution to lose weight?

FVCC steps up to help Haiti!!!
Fox Valley Christian Church stepped up this weekend to help Haiti through our ministry partners at G.O. Ministries. Over the weekend we took up a special offering to support the relief efforts in Haiti. And had a great result.
This weekend folks from FVCC gave $2,680 to the relief efforts through G.O. Ministries. That money is already on it's way to Haiti.
But it's not too late to give if you didn't get a chance to this weekend. This coming weekend (January 24) we will be taking up an additional special offering to go directly to relief efforts in Haiti. If you would like to donate, bring a check made out to FVCC with "Haiti" in the memo line and place it in the offering basket. If you would like to donate cash, bring it in an envelope marked with "Haiti" on the outside and we will make sure that it gets to it's destination.
It would be great if we could double that this weekend. Together, the Kingdom of God can make a huge impact in help His people in Haiti!

Help FVCC help Haiti!!!
Fox Valley Christian Church has a long history of working with and supporting G.O. Ministries in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. We have been serving alongside them for over 10 years through financial support and short term missions trips (like we are planning this spring break). With all the devastation in Haiti, the staff of FVCC feels that we CAN DO SOMETHING to help the people of Haiti. G.O. Ministries is already on the ground in the Dominican Republic and are working to help those who are crossing the boarder from Haiti into the D.R. for supplies and help. While we would like to get on a plane and go and lend a hand, that isn't practical.
So at FVCC this weekend (January 17 and 24) we are going to be accepting donations to go to G.O. Ministries to help with the earthquake relief. If you would like to donate to the rescue efforts and make a Kingdom impact, you can drop a check in the offering plate this weekend made out to Fox Valley Christian Church with "Haiti" in the memo line and we will make sure that your funds go directly to G.O. Ministries.
We are doing this to help our ministry partners who are on the front lines helping those in need. My hope and prayer is that the biggest help in this tragedy comes from the Church as the Church reaches out to those in need.
This weekend and next (January 17 and 24), help us help G.O. Ministries!

Genesis 21:1-4 (New International Version)
1 Now the LORD was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what he had promised. 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. 3 Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him. 4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him.Thursday, January 14, 2010

6 Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

Help for Haiti!!! (UPDATED... again... again)
Like you I'm sure, I have been watching some of the coverage of what is happening just south of our borders in a very poor section of the world. If you've missed it, Haiti was hit by a massive 7.0 earthquake yesterday afternoon that has left the country devastated. As I've watched some of the coverage, I have thought to myself, "What can I do to help?" Several of my friends have posted links and I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities for all of God's people to get involved in helping out in Haiti.
For many years I have been working with World Vision to do the 30 Hour Famine with our students. So I can vouch that they are a great organization that cares a great deal for the lives and well-being of folks in need.
If you would like to help Haiti, World Vision is taking donations. (Check them out HERE.) It is going to take a massive effort to get this country back on it's feet and it would be awesome if God's Kingdom lead the way in making a difference.
Here are some other organizations that you might consider supporting:
- Compassion International
- Samaritan's Purse
- Haitian Christian Outreach
- Hands and Feet (Audio Adrenaline)
- G.O. Ministries (an FVCC supported missionary organization)
P.S.: For those who may be wondering about G.O. Ministries and their ministry in the Dominican Republic, I have heard from a couple of missionary friends from G.O. on Facebook. Everyone in the G.O. organization seems to be okay and they are already beginning to serve in any way possible. They stated that they felt the quake but it didn't do any damage. Some missionaries from G.O. are serving in Haiti and they have been heard from and are okay. John Martinez, Isaias Gabriel, Jenn Goodenough and Eric Leach have posted on facebook from Santiago, D.R. stating that they are okay.

Genesis 12:1-4 (New International Version)
1 The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. 2 "I will make you into a great nation
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you."
4 So Abram left, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran.

Dominican Republic Chili Dinner Fundraiser

Nothing sounds better in mid-January than a big bowl of steaming hot chili. (My mouth is watering just typing about it!)
That's part of the reason why we planned a Chili Dinner Fundraiser for our upcoming Dominican Republic Missions trip.
The benefit dinner is scheduled for Friday night, January 29 from 6 pm to 8:30 pm. There will be plenty of chili for everyone. The cost of the event is $6 per person, kids 12 and under are $3 and children 3 and under are free. If you bring the whole family, the family rate is $20.
We've created a facebook event page for the event. Or you can sign up at FVCC over the weekend at the Welcome Center. We're also having a Silent Student Auction for a Day of Service. Childcare will be provided for those 3 and under if desired.
We'd love to have you come out and join us... eat some chili and support the students going to the Dominican Republic over spring break. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at Jim@fvcc.com.

Brand New Year... Brand New You!!!!
Dream with me for a second... If anything could be different for the better about your relationship with in 2010 than it was in 2009, what would it be? That's a fun question!!!
That's the question that spawned a fun new series this week called "Brand New Year... Brand New You!!" at Live Wire and High Voltage. And I'm pretty pumped about it. It started out as a one week message... but I think that it's going to grow into a 5 week series.
This week was the introduction. The next couple of weeks we're going to talk about:
- New attitudes
- New habits
- New growth
- New opportunities

Pictures taken on a cell phone... unusual New Year's Resolutions

This morning in both Live Wire and High Voltage, we talked about New Year's Resolutions for 2010.
I got a couple of the more random and cool New Year's resolutions that I have heard of in a while. First, one of my students has resolved to only wear shorts in 2010. And he had shorts on this morning. Now... maybe I need to clarify that when I got to church this morning, it was -10. So I guess he's on the right track since it was cold and he stuck to his resolution.
But I had a second student who has resolved to take a picture on her phone and post it to a blog. That's a pretty cool idea. In fact, the picture here on this page is one of her's. (Check it out for yourself HERE.)
Many of the high schoolers didn't have any resolutions but these middle schoolers definitely get the credit for creative New Year's resolutions!!! Way to go guys!!!

Colt McCoy and Jesus and Leadership
A buddy of mine David Norman posted a great post this morning about injured star quarterback for the Texas Longhorns Colt McCoy. (You can read his post HERE.) I watched a little bit of the game, but honestly gave up at halftime as it looked like Alabama was going to run away with it... especially because Texas' star quarterback, Colt McCoy went out injured the first series of the game. David writes this:
"The Longhorns played well, but couldn't overcome the loss of the player that the team is built around - Colt McCoy. The offense centers around him, and the defense gains confidence in knowing that he can put points on the board.
That should cause us to ask the question, "Who is our church built around?"
There's a growing trend in churches of making the lead pastor the star-player that the church is built around. His charisma and contacts are considered to be the things that carry the church. His preaching or leadership gift move the church forward.
This is wrong.
Our churches must be built upon Jesus."
I totally agree with David. As I thought about his post further, I wondered "what happens to ministries that are built around a 'super-pastor'"?
So many ministries are exactly like David said... they are built around a super-pastor or super-youth pastor or super-worship pastor. While I totally agree that they should be built around Jesus, many aren't. Instead they are built around one central individual. When that person leaves, dies, moves away, burns out, etc, what happens to that ministry, church or organization?
Exactly what happened to Texas' football team... it falls apart. Ministries need to be built on Jesus, as the chief cornerstone (see Matthew 16:16 and Ephesians 2:20). Ministry also needs to be spread out over a variety of different individuals who are equipped and prepared for ministry (see Ephesians 4:10-13).
Too many churches may make the right move of putting Christ first in their congregation. But they allow a super-pastor to DO all the ministry. Elders and deacons aren't trained up. Ministry leaders and other staff aren't empowered. All ministry roads lead back to one individual.
Maybe where Texas made its biggest mistake in not training up others who could lead the team in Colt's place if he wasn't there. Because the reality is that sooner (due to injury) or later (due to graduation) he isn't going to be there.
Team leadership in the church should be focused on Christ as the head first... and second it should be spread out appropriately over a variety of individuals who are equipped and prepared to go onto the field for every game, whether Colt is in or not.

Glad to be home!!!!

After having been gone for 15 days out of the last 17 (Christmas travels and LCS Intensive week in Springfield), it was great to be home.
So this morning, I enjoyed a little Bible reading, morning coffee and time on the couch. It was great. Our cats even loved it and joined me.
It was just what the doctor ordered... downtime!!!

Help with daily Bible reading...
One of the resolutions that Christians always this time of the year is to read the Bible more regularly. So I was thrilled when I saw that YouVersion and LifeChurch.tv came out with some new Bible reading plans that are totally awesome!!! If you are looking for some help with Bible reading in 2010, they've got some great help for you.
There are 20 some new plans ranging in difficulty to match your skill level. Some easy readings of a couple of verses or chapters a day. Some serious readings like through the Bible in 90 days. There's something for everyone!!!
I'm working on two right now. The first is through the Bible in 365 days in a chronological fashion. The other is through Psalms (2x in a year) and Proverbs (12x in a year).
So, if you are looking for a do-able Bible reading plan, no need to spend money. These are free. And for you iPhone/iPod Touch, Android Blackberry users... You can download the free apps for their programs and read along and check off your readings on your mobile device!!!
SWEET!!!
Check it out HERE. You won't be sorry... and 2010 will be an incredible year because you spent time regularly in God's Word.
