"Channel 4 is to investigate a claim that it misled viewers in a survival series, in the latest allegation of reality being manipulated on a TV show.
Born Survivor featured British adventurer Bear Grylls dealing with "perilous situations" in the wild.
But a crew member told the Sunday Times some nights were spent in hotels.
Channel 4 insisted Grylls was never billed as working entirely unaided, but promised to raise the matter with the production company that made the show.
American survival consultant Mark Weinert, who was recruited by Diverse Productions, told the paper Grylls claimed to be stranded on a desert island on one occasion."
I love Man vs. Wild... but, they never say that it is actual situation. It's that he is showing you how to do it.
It's still good stuff.

This is why I like Survivorman (Les Stroud) better. This guy is really out there on his own for 7 days at a time -- no camera crew, no staged stunts, no safety net (well, maybe he has a sat phone or something...).

I like Les as well for the same reasons Jeff indicated - he's on his own, no camera crew, etc. I have learned a great deal from both of them, but I just love Bear's approach to teaching wilderness survival. He jumps into quicksand, frozen lakes, muddy bogs, etc to show you how to get out. He makes ropes out of vines and climbs down a waterfall. He will drink his own urine if needed and uses his boxers as a hat. He eats almost anything including live scorpions, tree frogs, and rattlesnakes. And where else would you learn that a wad of spider's webbing can be used to coagulate an open wound?
ReplyDeleteSure it feels staged at times and you've got to wonder if the survival expert (watch the credits at the end) is right there feeding him info about the region and stories of people getting stranded, but Bear has so much more personality than Les. If I am stuck on a deserted island, I want Bear with me not Les. (Maybe I should have said my wife, but what does she know about wilderness survival?!?)
Besides, the show you are referring to isn't Man vs Wild; it's the British version of the show. Man vs Wild is totally authentic...I hope...but even if it isn't, who cares? It's still a great show!
