Month of Wisdom - October 26

We have to be careful about the phrase... "I was only joking."  Most of the time when we say this, we weren't really joking.  We just don't want to seem harsh or cruel.

We make fun of something or someone...
We say something we know we shouldn't...
We say something that we know will hurt...
We pretend we aren't trying to be mean...
We are trying to impress others standing around us...

Then we say... "I'm just kidding..." When we really aren't.  And we do it all the time.

Solomon puts it this way in Proverbs 26...

Proverbs 26:18-19 (NIV)
 18 Like a madman shooting
       firebrands or deadly arrows

19 is a man who deceives his neighbor
and says, "I was only joking!"

Something to think about the next time you're tempted to say something you shouldn't followed by "just kidding..."
